A territory of Tasmania, Macquarie Island is located approximately 1500 km south-south-east of the Tasmanian mainland - about half way between the Tassie and Antarctica. In 1997 Macquarie Island was listed as a World Heritage Area - the second Tasmanian listing after the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Around 3.5 million seabirds and 80,000 elephant seals arrive on Macquarie Island each year to breed and moult. There are no permanent residents on the island, and therefore no infrastructure for visitors. There is, however, an Australian Antarctic Division research station that is home to between 20 and 40 researchers and support staff during the course of any given year. You may not be able to visit Macquarie Island as a traveller, but we think it's fascinating and beautiful all the same, and an important part of the Tassie story.
